Mark Tompkins
Song and Dance

Applause sets in. The artist bows in front of an invisible audience. The – fictitious – show has come to an end, and „Show and Dance“, a play about the mysterious offstage world, begins. Mark Tompkins, most individual French choreographer and charismatic dancer with a voice reminiscent of grinded light metal, is slowly changing his clothes and singing along: in whispers, energetically, melancholically, erotically and provocatively. Songs by Bob Dylan, Patti Smith and Claude François. Around him the stage is being dismantled. His tall, bony figure is slipping into women’s dresses, high heels and a wig, is veiling itself and stripping itself again. A curtain drops, another raises, all theatrical illusion becomes blurred in a no man‘s land somewhere between dream and reality.
