Dances for Lucia Długoszewski

© Erick Hawkins Dance Foundation

Everybody’s fired up! The oeuvre of American composer Lucia Długoszewski is currently being rediscovered. The keen-to-experiment artist was born to Polish immigrants and worked with New York choreographer and dancer Erick Hawkins – the first male dancer with Martha Graham – for over 40 years. She provided the music for many of his pieces. This connection to dance has prompted contemporary choreographers Weronika Pelczyńska from Warsaw and Elizabeth Ward from Vienna to reinterpret Długoszewski’s world of sound. The two dancers are accompanied by Klangforum Wien, which has only recently recorded a CD of selected works by the composer – including Abyss and Caress (1975). The musicians enthuse about her music being “fascinating, utterly mad, rousing”. The ensemble recently received the German Record Critics’ Award for this recording.
