Our everyday lives are like a jungle sometimes, where everybody has to fight for survival in their own way. KIM Sungyong, Artistic Director of the Korea National Contemporary Dance Company in Seoul since 2023, shares this view. KIM interprets the jungle as a place of collisions between instinct and vitality of the body. His new stage work demonstrates how making and being made, the hidden and the revealed, relaxation and tension can run parallel to each other. To this end, KIM has developed a special form of movement research, which he calls “Process Init”. This method serves to awaken the individual senses of the 17 dancers, who significantly expand the spectrum of their movements by exploring each other’s reactions. JUNGLE is devised as an attempt to push the dancing to a degree of intensity that inspires the audience to rethink the weight and depth of human existence in a fundamental way.
