On 30th March 2021, Trajal Harrell invited eight dancers to the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain, Paris, for an exceptional live-streamed event. In the exhibition, closed to the public at the time, by his longtime friend, artist Sarah Sze, Trajal Harrell himself and eight rapturous performers dance for uninterrupted six hours, from dusk into the depths of the Parisian night. The choreography consists of a loop of 11 dance pieces set to a soundtrack compiled by Trajal Harrell and in costumes specially designed by him. The film shows a condensed version of this night inspired by Merce Cunningham's Events, mixed with nightly impressions of Paris. Friend of a Friend is a declaration of friendship to each other and to art - full of poetry and elegant lightness.
