Recognition is good, an award is better – but it’s best to turn good and better into art all over again. These were US American choreographer Trajal Harrell’s thoughts when he found out that he had been voted „Dancer of the Year“ 2018 by the Berlin magazine tanz. The result of his deliberations is Dancer of the Year. In this powerfully emotional solo it is by way of retunring to the legacy of Butoh and of the Japanese choreographer Tatsumi Hijikata which trigger urgent questions of cultural transmission, the value of dance as a practice, about the politics of performing dance and any kind of selfie. An extremely touching solo.
