Simon Mayer’s artistic roots range from rural folk culture to the Wiener Staatsballett through to Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s educational institution P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels. SunBengSitting (“sun bench sitting”) is dedicated to the liberation of a genre that is suspected of being even more narrow-minded than ballet: folk dance. In his heart-warming and humorous performance concert, the structures, techniques, instruments and devotional objects of Upper Austrian custom become the material for an enthralling and emotional piece on topical questions about urban and rural living, about being at home and being a stranger but also about oppression and (artistic) freedom.
