His choreographic theatre bears masterpieces, which are shaped, carved and forged out of massive/-bulky visual symbols. The native of Carinthia, Johann Kresnik, still revolutionary and ruthless critic of our merciless exploitative society, has run his own company for the past 33 years. Today, he is seen as an undiminished grand old master of the German political dance theatre. Renditions of his performances in Vienna of “Ulrike Meinhof” or the work “Francis Bacon” during ImPulsTanz ’94 are unforgettable. Repeatedly, Kresnik extracts artistic raw material from biographical subject matter.
In “Frida Kahlo” he tears apart the fate of a politically conscious Mexican artist, who sustains severe injuries during an accident, the consequences of which cause her to suffer for the rest of her life. Right down the middle of Kresnik’s colourful stage are tracks – a red illuminated bed rolls down them, Kahlo, braces on her legs, rises from it. Depression, celebrations, and politics effect her being as much as the peak and slumps of her love towards the painter Diego Rivera and the tragedy of her unfulfilled wish to have a child, after the accident.
