“What if we considered Narcissus as an explorer rather than an egocentric?” Elisabeth Bakambamba Tambwe, who has made a name for herself as someone who likes to take a closer look at familiar stories, wants more from the myth of Narcissus than a handy allegory for our era of self-centredness. Instead, Max Mayer, Sunny Jana and Bishop Black, three performers with radically different artistic backgrounds, descend into the mirror and produce deep insights into our obsession with the surface – self-knowledge “a project that is both necessary and risky”. SelFist, which continues Tambwe’s longtime exploration of the writings of Roland Barthes, celebrates its world premiere at this year’s edition of ImPulsTanz – and, as always with Tambwe, one can look forward to surprise guests.
