Ordinariness is often underrated. Not, however, by Alexander Vantournhout, the brilliant, up-and-coming Belgian choreographer, in this virtuoso duet on a glittering stage. A man and a woman in unusual costumes merge into a multi-limbed body that manages to achieve the most incredible acrobatic feats. Despite the fact that this choreographic miracle begins with an ordinary handshake – what follows doesn’t look at all like something that every_body would be able to do: whether on a small treadmill, holding on to an overhead grab rail or moving on a table in a way that’s fit for the circus. However: just as Hofmannsthal’s Everyman isn’t an average Joe but a very wealthy man, the choreographer suggests that even acrobats are just regular people. Or, to put it another way: that outstanding potential lies dormant in every body. The piece contains encouragement wrapped up in a breathtaking play of movement. Because, as ordinary as we may think we are, we are all very special.
