Shortcuts to Familiar Places

Even before James Batchelor takes the stage, we see who brought him here: a video shows his childhood dance teacher, Ruth Osborne, demonstrating the methods of someone she herself was hugely influenced by, the Austrian Gertrud Bodenwieser, who after fleeing the Nazis paved the way for expressive dance (“Ausdruckstanz”) in Australia. A historical investigation, an examination of the present and above all a magnificently performed personal tribute: by literally embodying his mentors’ legacy, Batchelor retains it and carries it forward.

Austrian Premiere
