The Divine Cypher

Ana Pi’s The Divine Cypher is research, poetry and politics at the same time – an examination of ancient Haitian sacred dances and of the present into which these gestures continue to reach. The Brazilian choreographer is also in dialogue with experimental filmmaker Maya Deren, who was born in Kyiv and died in 1961. In addition to their common interest in Haitian culture and history they share the precise and innovative way of keeping the past alive and opening our eyes to the present through the medium of film.
