Dear Madam, did you ever, for once in your life, in a fantasy you have never talked about, want to be Muhammad Ali in his own words? Or: Hey, young man, can you imagine formulating your resignation as tea-party animal Sarah Palin? This and much, much more is possible here and now thanks to New York director Annie Dorsen’s Spokaoke. For this brilliant participatory project she collected more than 90 great speeches delivered by politicians, award winners and witnesses before a court, among others, and prepared them as videos for recitation. According to the artist, each of the speeches in her spoken karaoke brings history to life again. But there’s more to it, and that’s the experience of history reformulating itself in one’s own body: as Martin Luther King, Socrates, Sojourner Truth, Charles de Gaulle or – Jesus.
