Things are about to get intimate in an unusual way, because in this piece Dana Michel wants to know what sex education actually is. So far, the artist from Montreal has caused a stir with performances such as Yellow Towel and Mercurial George, won the ImPulsTanz Award in 2014 and received the Silver Lion for Innovative Dance at the Biennale di Venezia in 2017. In her latest production, which just premiered at the Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels, she tackles the problem of how the insistence on a specific form of sexuality can become an act of oppression. To this end, she went in search of a sex education that meets the complex demands of today’s bodies, ideas and identities. According to her, this solo work provides “a look into my internal developments”. And it’s a manifesto, an archaeology of desires and even a sexual ethnography!
