Whenever Paxton accepts an invitation, his mere presence will guarantee improvisation performances of the highest quality. This was the case in Vienna 1997, when he featured in Meg Stuart’s "Crash Landing", but also at Danças na Cidade 1999 in Lisbon.
Born in Arizona/USA, he joined the Merce Cunningham Company in the 1960s, then engaged himself in founding the Judson Dance Theatre in 1962 and was also one of the co-founders of the Grand Union Group.
He is furthermore inventor of contact improvisation, a form of dance characterized by two or more people moving together in almost constant and spontaneous contact.
