Laura Arís is a versatile artist known for her performing skills and an esteemed international dance pedagogue with a career spanned by prestigious dance companies and independent artistic ventures. Since 2009, she has developed her creative practice, bringing together a rich body of work that includes commissioned projects, solo performances and many collaborations with other artists.
After finishing her studies at Institut del Teatre de Barcelona, she received the Extraordinary Student Award. Between 1996 and 1999, she was a dancer at Lanònima Imperial dance company, directed by Juan Carlos García, in Barcelona and a member of the General Elèctrica artistic collective in several creations of Tomás Aragay. Laura received the Lladró Award as outstanding dancer at Festival de Valencia in 1997.
Former dancer of the Belgium company Ultima Vez, directed by Wim Vandekeybus, for the creations and touring of: Inasmuch as life is Borrowed (2000); Scratching the Inner Fields (2001); Blush (2002); What a Body does not Remember (reprise 2002); Sonic Boom (2004); Puur (2005); Spiegel (2006); Menske (2007), What’s the Prediction (2008); and the dance films: Here After (2007), Blush (2005), and the short fiction film Inasmuch as Life is Borrowed (2000).
Laura co-founded Ember, together with Jorge Jáuregui, an artistic platform that held their works from 2009 until 2014. She was the Artist-in-Residence at Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (2012-2014) and has directed choreographic works at Centro de las Artes de San Luís Potosí (Mexico, 2010) ZPA - Zagrebacki Plesni Ansambl (Croatia, 2011 and 2022), MAPDANCE company, Chichester (UK, 20918), HKAPA in Hong Kong (2013-2014), and CND - Compañía Nacional de Danza del Ecuador (2019).
Over the past few years, she has assisted Wim Vandekeybus with the re-stage of Puur for the Royal Ballet of Sweden and the creation of Die Bakchen-Lasst Uns Tanzen for Residenztheater (Munich). She also was Wim Vandekeybus’ choreographer’s assistant and movement coach of several performances directed by the theatre director Ivo Van Hove: Salome at the Dutch National Opera & Ballet Amsterdam in 2017, Elektra/Orestes at la Comedie Francaise in Paris in 2019, and Age of Rage for I.T.A. International Theatre Amsterdam, in 2021.
Laura’s teaching expertise has her sharing her knowledge and artistry with students worldwide. Her teaching journey includes engagements with prestigious institutions and festivals like ImPulsTanz Vienna, P.A.R.T.S., La Faktoria Choreographic Center in Pamplona; Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts; Festival Deltebre Dansa; Institut del Teatre in Barcelona; S.E.A.D. Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance; Korean National University of Arts Seoul; Atelier Transformation in Montreal; TRY International Training and Research Program for Young dancers in Lucca, among many others.
