BIOGRAPHY

Verena Schneider (she/her, they/them), born in Austria, is an interdisciplinary artist, performer, and circus/dance maker based in Vienna and working between Austria and France. With a background in biology, Circus Arts (FLIC – Scuola di Circo, ESAC – Toulouse), and choreography, Verena’s practice explores the interplay between the human body and material presence – working with both animate and inanimate matter.

After initially studying biology, she began merging Acrobatics and Contemporary Dance to develop a sustainable, interdisciplinary approach. Her artistic work spans stage pieces, site-specific performances, and installations – as traces of performative actions – and engages with themes such as the ecology of the body, perception, origin, and artistic labour.

She has performed for choreographers and companies including Doris Uhlich, OFFTANZ Tirol, Bert Gstettner (Tanz*Hotel), and Le GdRA (Christophe Rulhes & Julien Cassier). Together with Charlotte Le May, Verena co-founded the contemporary circus company Kumquat, where they developed projects such as Alter and Augenblicke. In Vienna, she also founded the cultural association Freifall and continues to collaborate across disciplines.

In 2024, she received the danceWEB Scholarship at ImPulsTanz Vienna under the mentorship of Isabel Lewis.

Currently, Verena is working for ON THE EDGE Festival and with Eva Müller (OFFTANZ Tirol), while continuing to develop her own project Erde & Plastik. Their works and collaborations have been presented at venues such as WUK Performing Arts, Theater am Werk, Parallel Vienna, CircusDanceFestival, Premieretage Innsbruck, and Latitude50.
