BIOGRAPHY

Growing up in Tübingen, the city of Hölderlin, Cornelia Böhnisch developed a deep appreciation for nature, inspired by Hölderlin’s writings. Additionally, being raised in a family of shoemakers instilled in her a deep respect for craftsmanship, which is also reflected in her work.

She later studied Contemporary Dance at the Anton Bruckner University in Linz, and since then, she has called Austria her home base. Cornelia combines choreography, installation, and performance in her artistic practice. With roots in classical music, she seamlessly merges movement and sound, thus dissolving traditional hierarchies. She explores materials for their musical and choreographic potential, creating immersive environments and moving sculptures that evoke a deep sense of vitality and vulnerability.

Her works, marked by radical simplicity and an elemental nature, invite profound somatic experiences. Projects like LEAK, Tilting Moments, and TON captivate the audience and challenge the restless pace of modern life through deliberate slowness and repetition, presenting slow surprises rather than fast ones. Her audience is often diverse and without age restrictions.

As the co-artistic director of Toihaus, Cornelia collaborates closely with Katharina Schrott. Their joint efforts were recognized in 2022 with the main prize of the Cultural Fund of the City of Salzburg, recognizing their outstanding artistic collaboration and contribution to arts and culture.
