Birgit Gunzl, born in Vienna, received her contemporary dance education at ArtEZ in Arnhem. She has performed with notable choreographers and companies, including Anouk van Dijk, Boukje Schweigman, Hans Hof Ensemble, Dylan Newcomb, and Wim Vandekeybus/Ultima Vez.
Over time, her dance interests have evolved towards interdisciplinary improvisation, focusing on the connection and communication between people and different art forms. After spending 26 years in the Netherlands, Birgit relocated to Carinthia, where she now practices osteopathy.
Since 2006, Birgit has taught Countertechnique at schools such as ArtEZ (Arnhem), CODARTS (Rotterdam), AHK (Amsterdam), HJS (Amsterdam), and in various countries including the US, Russia, and Denmark.
“I love the human aspect of this art form and am fascinated by the immediacy of the decision-making process on stage, how a subtle shift of concentration can have a huge influence on the energies on stage. In order to function well in circumstances that constantly change, being trained in a technique that emphasises process rather than a set result makes all the difference. I want to help people accept their body as the perfect starting point and work in a way so that they can get the most out of dancing in terms of range, technique, endurance, and most importantly, joy!”
