Matteo Marziano Graziano (they/them) is a queer opera director and choreographer, based in Berlin. They have worked in opera houses such as Aalto Theater Essen, Oper Wuppertal, Dutch National Opera Amsterdam, and Staatstheater Hannover. Since 2024, they have assumed the role of assistant director and rehearsal director at Deutsche Oper Berlin. In 2018, Matteo won the Young Direction Production Prize at the 2018 Macerata Opera Festival. Beyond the confines of opera, Matteo’s artistic pursuits span a array of mediums, encompassing video, stage productions of varying scales, and immersive, participatory formats. Matteo presented their works at venues and events such as HAU Berlin, PACT Zollverein, ICKamsterdam, KOW Gallery Berlin, Künstlerhaus Bethanien Berlin, Artissima Turin, and Mostra del Cinema di Venezia. From 2018 to 2022, Matteo was appointed in-house associate choreographer at BTT Balletto Teatro di Torino. Matteo is also a therapist, a raver, an ImPulsTanz aficionadx and enjoys riding horses. Rooted in their formative experiences as a neurodivergent individual with a predisposition for psychic connections, Matteo’s artistic inquiry converges at the intersection of somatic embodiment, consciousness exploration, paranormal phenomena, and radical pleasure bio-politics. Interrogating themes such as the embodiment of consciousness, the impact of affect, and the dynamics of social relationships, Matteo draws inspiration from an eclectic array of disciplines, including consciousness sciences, queer studies, system theory, spirituality, and deep ecology. Complementing their artistic practice, Matteo has pursued training in eco-somatics with Cinzia Delorenzi as well as systemic and family constellations (Familienaufstellungen, Bert Hellinger) and other energy-based therapeutic techniques. They regularly host healing circles in Berlin, providing support and guidance to individuals in need, and holding their artistic practice within a holistic approach.
