Emma W. Howes (DE/CA)

BIOGRAPHY

Emma Waltraud Howes is a Berlin-based visual artist, dancer and choreographer originally from Toronto, Canada. Oscillating between movement and form, her time-based performance installations incorporate soft sculpture, voice, and improvisation with fallible objects. Buttressed by graphic systems for concentrated encounters, or “serious play,” this process embraces embodied experience toward the creation of “Cadavre Exquis” – chimeras that foster alternative perspectives. Recent solo projects include: Bang Bang Baroque, Musée d’art de Joliette (MAJ), Joliette, Quebec (2024); Bang Bang Baroque, 3-channel film, Studio Ludwig, Berlin (2022); Manageable Matter, workshop-performance, Associazione Culturale Spettro, Brescia, Italy (2022); Глаз, Frontviews, Berlin (2021). Recent collaborations include: Cannibalizing the Conductor, single-channel film with Derek Howard and Justin F. Kennedy (2022); CAMming: Collective Auto-mythologizing for the CAMera, ImPulsTanz – Vienna Internation Dance Festival (2021); Vorglühen, OUT NOW, Uferhallen, Berlin (2021); UNFURL the jukebox musical: a shareable cypher, Montag Modus, Radialsystem, Berlin (2021); UNFURL: a lucid science fiction, 11th Berlin Biennale, Martin Gropius Bau, Berlin (2020); and Some Murder Theatre in Here, Volksbühne Grüner Salon, Berlin (2020). She has worked with and for Pilvi Takala, Joan Jonas, Georgia Sagri, Jeremy Shaw, among others.
