Christopher Matthews (UK/US)

BIOGRAPHY

Christopher Matthews is an award-winning, American-born choreographer, performer, visual artist and curator based in London. Thematically, Matthews’ works are intended to be a dialogue with the audience on the subjects of spectatorship, criticism, gender, body image, queerness, working conditions, intersections of the classical and contemporary, icon vs self, pop culture and dance histories. Matthews holds a BFA from New York University Tisch School of the Arts and an MA in Choreography from Trinity Laban.

His video and performance works have been presented internationally, including at the Victoria & Albert Museum, Sadler’s Wells, Art Night 2018, Cornell University, Yorkshire Dance, Independent Dance, The Place, Thessaloniki Queer Arts Festival, Enclave Gallery, Arbyte Gallery, ]performance space[, Chisenhale Dance Space, Glasgow Gallery of Photography, Hyde Park Art Club, MonArt Digital Art, CollectArt, LimaZulu, 4BID Gallery, Mount Florida Gallery, Castlefield Gallery, Prism Contemporary, Millennium, Reykjavik Dance Festival, Cent Quatre, MCLA Gallery 51, Villa Empain and Loop Video Art Festival, and he was named a 2024 Blue Chip Finalist. His art has been published in Queer Art Collect Art, Softcore, Beyond Queer Words and The Body Revolts. Christopher sits on the Board of Trustees for Independent dance.

As a performer, he currently works with Trajal Harrell. He can be seen in the feature film Wicked, directed by John Chu and choreographed by Christopher Scott, as well as in The Magic Faraway Tree, choreographed by Ivan Michael Blackstone; starring Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy.
