BIOGRAPHY

Martin Kilvady was born in 1974 in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, where he completed his high school education. He then enrolled in a teacher education programme in Contemporary Dance at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava, Faculty of Music and Dance, where he received a Master of Arts degree. Choreographers and teachers who had the greatest influence on his development as a dancer include Jan Dúrovčík and Libor Václavík. From 1992 to 1996, he was a member of the Torzo Ballet Company and performed as a freelancer in several productions with the Opera / Ballet Bratislava, Slovakia.

In the summer of 1997, he became a member of Anna Teresa de Keersmaeker's ROSAS dance company in Brussels. He danced in numerous performances, including WOULD, the reprise of MIKROCOSMOS, and ACHTERLAND, and contributed to the creation of JUST BEFORE, DRUMMING, I SAID, and IN REAL TIME. During his years with ROSAS, the teachings of David Zambrano and Chrysa Parkinson further expanded his dance horizons.

Between 2001 and 2004, he collaborated with choreographer Roberto Oliván in the creation of NATURAL STRANGE DAYS and DE FARRA. In the 2002-2004 seasons, he worked with the circus company Rital Brocante. Since 2003, he has been a member of Thomas Hauert’s company ZOO, performing in FIVE, MODIFY, MORE LESS SAID SONGS, WALKING OSCAR, PUZZLED, and ACCORDS.

Martin is also a co-founder of Les SlovaKs Dance Collective. Between 2006 and 2018, they choreographed and performed OPENING NIGHT, JOURNEY HOME, and FRAGMENTS. Since 2018, he has started creating his own work. He has created and performed numerous solo pieces, including The Craft of Dry Lands Ice Skating (2018), Dark Solo (2019), Bouldering the Theatre Couloirs (2020), The Occasional Worker (2021), Nos-tal-žíí (2022), Silent Dance (2023), and choreographed for BB Dance Theatre DŠT Zlaté Dno (2023). His solo performance The Sofa Piece was scheduled for 2024.

Martin has been involved in over 40 original creations and has performed across all continents of the world. He has been guiding ongoing movement research and teaching for more than 30 years.
