Doris Uhlich studied pedagogy for contemporary dance at the Conservatory of Vienna. From 2002 to 2009, she was a performer with theatercombinat and has been developing her own projects since 2006. As a choreographer and performer, she creates works across a range of formats – from stage pieces to site-specific performances. She collaborates with people from diverse backgrounds and with different physical realities, opening up the dance floor to individuals with physical disabilities, exploring the potential of nudity beyond eroticism and provocation, and examining the relationship between humans and machines in complex and nuanced ways.
Her projects include a. o. und (premiered at dietheater Künstlerhaus 2007), SPITZE (brut / Vienna 2008), mehr als genug (Les Subsistances / Lyon 2009), Rising Swan (brut / Vienna 2010), Uhlich (Wiener Festwochen, Vienna 2011), Come Back (steirischer herbst, Graz 2012), more than naked (ImPulsTanz 2013), Universal Dancer (brut / Vienna 2014), Boom Bodies (Tanzquartier Vienna 2016), Ravemachine (brut, WUK performing arts / Vienna 2016) and Habitat (Donaufestival Krems 2017), Seismic Session (ImPulsTanz and Secession Vienna 2017), Every Body Electric (Tanzquartier Vienna 2018).
Scholarships and Residencies include, a.o.: Les Subsistances / Lyon, ImPulsTanz / Vienna, Tanzquartier Vienna, k3 / Tanzplan Hamburg and the Austrian Cultural Forum / NYC. 2011/2012 she was Artist in Residence at the Festspielhaus St. Pölten, 2012/13, 2015 and 2017 she was the mentor in the mentorship programme by the Austrian Ministry of Culture and Arts. In 2017 she was the mentor of the danceWEB scholarship programme in the frame of ImPulsTanz.
She taught at a.o. Tanzwerkstatt Vienna, ImPulsTanz, Tanzquartier Vienna, Konservatorium Privatuniversität Vienna, k3 / Tanzplan Hamburg, Tanzhaus Zurich, Internationale Schillertage at the National Theatre Mannheim, Arts Academy Halle, Theatre Academy Helsinki, Beijing Fringe Festival / China, Movement Research / NYC, Love-In / Toronto, Studio 303 / Montreal, Oita University / Japan, HZT / Berlin. Since autumn 2015 she is lecturer at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna.
Doris Uhlich has received numerous awards and honours: she was named an "Outstanding Emerging Choreographer" in the 2008 Ballettanz yearbook and "Dancer of the Year" by tanz magazine in both 2011 and 2015. In 2013, she received the outstanding artist award in the Performing Arts category from the Austrian Federal Chancellery (BKA), and in 2017 she was awarded the Nestroy Special Award for Ravemachine. Most recently, she received the 2024 Austrian Art Award for Performing Arts from the BMKÖS. Additionally, her production SONNE was awarded the 2024 Austrian Music Theatre Award for "Best Dance Production".
