Cie. Maguy Marin (FR)
These six people incorporate the rhythm of the French folk dance farandole – and so they get the party started, accompanied by tantalising techno sounds created by Charlie Aubry. BiT sounds like “beat” in French, but also like a vulgar slang term for the male member, “bite”. This piece by Maguy Marin, who gained fame with her 1981 classic May B, is correspondingly ambivalent. The French choreographer, who has just been awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in Venice, blurs the boundaries between flirtation and rape. The party is interlaced with dark desires, and a dance of death, a farandole macabre, is implied. The trim gentlemen and ladies seem to have been thrown into a time where nothing fits together anymore.
