Ruth Childs / Lucinda Childs - Scarlett’s (CH/US)

Pastime / Carnation / Museum Piece

Immerse yourself in the world of early New York dance postmodernism, feel what it was like at a time of new departures when dancers discovered new movements every day: as co-founder of the legendary Judson Dance Theater in the early 1960s, Lucinda Childs was one of these pioneers. For today’s audience, it is truly a stroke of luck when an iconic dancer and choreographer like Childs has a niece, Ruth Childs, who is gifted in the same art. Since there are no film recordings of Childs’ early Judson pieces, the mature artist passed three of those dances on to the younger performer: Pastime (1963) was Lucinda Childs’ first solo ever, Carnation (1965) became well-known in Europe, unlike Museum Piece (1965), an ironic dance in the circus ring of George Seurat’s painting Le Cirque. Ruth Childs dances these works with wit and coolness, with respect, yet also with her personal touch. To round off the evening, two dances recorded on video will be shown as well: Calico Mingling and Katema.
