Releasing the Archive
Dancing the Soma-Ecstatic
In this workshop we release the body as archive to access soma-ecstatic practices. Drawing upon the embodied legacies of exiled Viennese modern dancers Gertrud Bodenwieser and Hilde Holger, we contemporise these through somatic and choreographic approaches. Participants will develop eccentric and demanding vocabularies that include organic, entangled and grotesque forms. Activating embodied traces of movements held in the corporeal, visual and written archives of lost dances from Vienna, the workshop asserts the possibility for dance to remain rather than disappear. Expanding the concept of re-enactment through creativity, critique and bodies in conflict, we move between cultures, times and places. Forging new varieties of expression for future choreographies through this somatic enquiry we explore how movement codes can be recovered to politicise time.
Carol Brown and Thomas Kampe have been collaborating since 2014 on an international project revitalising the corporeal legacies of exiled dancers from Austria. Their performance and screen works have been presented in collaboration with The New Zealand Dance Company and for international dance and screen festivals and exhibitions. Their work is presented at the Theater Museum as part of the exhibition, Alles tanzt. Kosmos Wiener Tanzmoderne.
