Demons of modernity are looking out of austere picture frames. Bodies, as translated by Egon Schiele into lines and colours, show the incipient dissolution of the clearly defined subject: Schiele’s masterpieces emerged at a time when philosophy, in the form of Friedrich Nietzsche, and psychoanalysis, in the form of Sigmund Freud, had begun to call the illusion of a coherent personality into question. Today, they attract special attention at Vienna’s Leopold Museum. For the Viennese company Liquid Loft under Chris Haring, deconstructing the concept of coherent personality patterns has become a matter of course: their characters are polyphonic on principle. Now, as eight acoustically linked “stand-alones” in several rooms of the museum, they confront themselves with the icons of a once outrageous concept of humankind.
