Hands shaking, bodies twitching, hunted looks on troubled faces. In this emotional piece, the bent, broken, yet ultimately harmonious movements of the five dancers resemble the undergrowth of internal conflict through which they have to fight their way. Argentinian choreographer Lisi Estaras and her artistic partner Ido Batash embark on a difficult journey in search of a modern-day Jewish identity. The violence of contradictory emotions provokes expressive dance segments with deliberately exaggerated gestures and distorted body figures. Vitality, alarm, relaxation and the desire for a universal connection between everybody everywhere are the main issues in The Jewish Connection Project. The musical landscape for this endeavour includes excerpts from compositions by Richard Wagner, superbly interpreted by soprano Maribeth Diggle. Estaras met Batash seven years ago, when they both performed in Alain Platel’s C(H)OEURS. Their common origins and shared artistic views inspired them to collaborate on this project.
