Mette Ingvartsen (BE/DK)
Now they are all finally presented together: the four extra-sharp Red Pieces by Mette Ingvartsen, to come (extended), 7 Pleasures, 21 pornographies and 69 positions. In her series, the Danish artist reflects on the history of sexuality, as it has been shown in performance and performance art since the 1960s to today. In her pieces, Ingvartsen deals with nudity and gender relations in very different artistic compositions, with the cultural construction and manipulation of bodies up to the ways how we have sex together. Ingvartsen encounters all this with wit and sensuality, political sensitivity and great candor.
The dark side of sexual libertinism is the excess of power. Donatien Alphonse François Marquis de Sade described this in great detail back in the late 18th century in his unfinished book The 120 Days of Sodom. In the final Red Piece, a solo, Mette Ingvartsen herself examines the connections between the economic aspect of pornography and how pornographic principles penetrate our society. Sensational “climaxes” entice everywhere, from action movies in the cinema to breaking news on television. The artist gets to the bottom of this logic and introduces 21 parallel universes of the pornographic, all of which extend into the realities of our lives. Eroticism and affect come to light as materials comprising excitement as well as cruelty, ridiculousness and irritation.
