Johann Kresnik | Gottfried Helnwein | Kurt Schwertsik & TANZLIN.Z (AT)
The “berserker” among the great choreographers for the theatre, Johann Kresnik, will be 80 this year. Besides his artistic excellence and not least in answer to current political developments, this is a great opportunity to show one of his major pieces again at Volkstheater Wien: From general to king and into power-hungry murderer – that’s the aberrant career path of Macbeth, the Shakespearean archetype of misguided masculinity. Three greats of the Austrian art scene took this material up. Internationally acclaimed painter Gottfried Helnwein created the stage set and costumes, no-nonsense dance artist Hans Kresnik devised a forceful choreography, and ingenious composer Kurt Schwertsik provided the breathtaking music. If you’re looking for a prime example of the phrase “visually powerful”, the expression applies precisely to this dance drama. This version of Macbeth by the TANZLIN.Z company under Mei Hong Lin is an artistic revival of the sensational original from 1988, which referred to the mysterious death of German politician Uwe Barschel the year before.
