Salva Sanchis & Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker / Rosas (ES & BE)
A Love Supreme
John Coltrane’s superb musical creed A Love Supreme from 1965 is “a milestone in 20th-century music,” says Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. And the brilliant tenor saxophonist (1926–1967) modestly remarked on the intention behind it, i.e. the expression of his enthusiasm for the mystical power of Far Eastern religious music: “I would like to bring to people something like happiness.” De Keersmaeker and her co-choreographer, Salva Sanchis, have reworked their original piece from 2005 to Coltrane’s masterful creation for four excellent young dancers, expanding it into a full-length performance. Each of the dancers concentrates on a specific musical instrument, and the dance that reflects their search for “an order of happiness” takes just as long as the recording of A Love Supreme. Jazz and choreography run parallel in this complex improvised dance piece, the result being a spiritual aesthetic experience for the ears as well as the eyes.
