Jan Fabre / Troubleyn (BE)

Belgian Rules / Belgium Rules

“Belgium is a country of surrealists,” says Jan Fabre and starts to sing a tongue-in-cheek anthem: “Oh beloved Belgium, oh (un)holy land of our fathers! Ceci n’est pas un pays.” This is not a country, chants the famous son of Antwerp, in the words of his fellow countryman René Magritte (“This is not a pipe.”). To him, Belgium is not a country but its representation: “Belgium is born out of the theatre, and theatre it shall remain.” It is not surprising that the first performance of this most passionate and most ambivalent of all conceivable homages takes place in Austria, which is, after all, the second most absurd small state in Europe. Jan Fabre delves deep into the treasure chests and waste bins of his home country, into a baroque orgy of clichés and irony. The universal artist ploughs through myths and realities with excessive images, laconic and inclined – albeit without a hint of nationalism – towards the Manneken Pis, yet far removed from the Atomium. A feast à la Fellini (Roma), celebrating the true anti-identity of the peaceful anarchy that is Belgium.
