Compagnie Catherine Diverrès (FR)
O Senseï & Stance II
Kazuo Ohno, the captivating master of Japanese butoh, will never be forgotten. Not least thanks to Catherine Diverrès. In 1997, when the choreographer – celebrated as a “queen” and a “diva” by French critics – first showed her solo Stance II, she also performed Fruits at ImPulsTanz. Now, twenty years later, Diverrès returns to Vienna with this solo double feature. In Ô Senseï, an homage to Kazuo Ohno, she dances in remembrance of her intensive collaboration with the sensei (master) for her piece Instance in the early 1980ies. Expressive, emotive and ironic, amid video ghosts and ghost voices, including that of Elvis (“Are You Lonesome Tonight”). In Stance II Diverrès moves as if in a duet with another voice brought back to life by her: that of the great Pier Paolo Pasolini, who reads from his work La Terra di Lavoro. The crackle of the vinyl record, the soft yet insistent sound of the words, the dreamy tone of a piano – heartfelt emotions.
