Goodbyes can be joyous occasions, but most of the time they are upsetting. Whether cold or passionate, in the hope of seeing one another again or saying farewell – they usually come with strong emotions. And, frequently, last lines are written when it’s time to say Goodbye. Viennese choreographer and performer Michikazu Matsune makes some of the most touching farewell letters the subject of this solo piece: a kamikaze pilot writes to his children before his mission; Austrian Empress Maria Theresia writes to Marie Antoinette before her daughter moves to the French court; a blind man addresses a note to his guide dog; and Kurt Cobain leaves some final words before his suicide. Matsune reads these lines and also between them. He tells stories about love and other intimate relationships. And he dances the emotions and contradictions found in these letters in his characteristic style that blends sobriety with the talent to touch on highly sensitive issues.
