Magdalena Chowaniec & Mani Obeya (AT/PL & AT/UK)

Songs of the Water / Tales of the Sea

It was a long and perilous journey. They have braved a passage which thousands so far, who were also on the run and in search of safety, had to pay for with their life. Initiated by the choreographic platform D.ID founded by Liz King, Magdalena Chowaniec and Mani Obeya have created an intense piece together with a group of refugees from Somalia, Côte d’Ivoire and Afghanistan about their respective odysseys. What does water signify for them now? Songs, dances and the words that make up their accounts serve the young men to extricate their bodies from the deadly force of the sea. Chowaniec, born in Poland, who presented the notable Attan bleibt bei uns [Attan stays with us] with refugees at last year’s ImPulsTanz, and Obeya, who was born in Nigeria, help us understand what many refugees have to endure before reaching Europe.

Magdalena Chowaniec is choreographer and bandleader of the post punk band The Mob Fixing Freedcom. Many Obeya is dancer, choreographer and singer/songwriter. He choreographed ao at Deutsche Oper Berlin and Schauspielhaus Dresden and is member of the electronic/rock band Sofa Surfers.

On presentation of the city paper "Augustin" you get free admission to the performance on 14 + 15 August, while ticket stocks last. "Augustin"-vendors will be around the venue.

Duration: 60 min
