Surjit Nongmeikapam (IN)

What are the factors that make a dance piece a success in Europe? Surjit Nongmeikapam, a highly talented dancer from Manipur, India, is looking for an appropriate answer to this question. It goes without saying that this cannot be done without a touch of critical irony. Nongmeikapam immerses himself in European dance consumption habits. In the process, he discovers plenty of marketing ideologies, distinctive artistic strategies and awkward attempts at self-exoticisation. The documentary piece for Choy Ka Fai’s SoftMachine project provides a good insight into Manipur, and allows us to experience just how strange Europe seems when viewed from a different cultural perspective.
