The Lee Ellroy Show
This is not your regular mother-and-son story but a piece about a real trauma. When James Ellroy, who was later to become the famous mystery writer, was ten years old, his mother Geneva was killed in a shabby street at the outskirts of Los Angeles. Later, the author wrote the autobiographical investigative thriller “My Dark Places” to come to terms with the fact that the case had never been solved and to deal with the obsessions triggered by losing his mother. The parallels to another murder case, which caused a much bigger stir in the late 1940ies and which Ellroy also made into a book – “The Black Dahlia” – are striking. “The Black Dahlia” was turned into a film by Brian De Palma in 2006, starring Scarlett Johansson. The duet “The Lee Ellroy Show” by renowned Belgian choreographer Hans Van den Broeck (“Everyman”, “Lac des Singes”) presents James and Geneva in a gloomy atmosphere reminiscent of David Lynch’s eerie movies (“Twin Peaks”, “Mulholland Drive”) and carried by characteristic sounds.
