Jérôme Bel (FR)

Jérôme Bel

Jérôme Bel is now regarded as having initiated a paradigm shift in contemporary dance: the great deconstructionist who reduced the art form to its basic elements, thereby providing a whole new point of view on dance. When the piece “Jérôme Bel” by the then 33-year-old French choreographer was first shown in Austria at the 1997 ImPulsTanz Festival, the work’s dance historical significance was not yet self-evident. Now, 19 years after its first performance in Paris, ImPulsTanz presents “Jérôme Bel” in Vienna once more, this time as an outstanding classic of postmodern choreography in the context of contemporary dance in which no stone has been left standing since the 1990ies. Well, then: enter light, enter music, enter the dancers. What follows is both an ironic and a provocative display of the body and the theatre as an institution that was part of a society to which the meaning of its own sign systems was a mystery. “Jérôme Bel” cleared these mists in the nineties. So? Is everything clearer now?
