Gaëtan Rusquet (BE/FR)
Humans and construction. Work and architecture. The built structure and its inevitable destruction. “Our ruins” was the working title of this piece by Gaëtan Rusquet before he changed it to “Meanwhile,”, which adds the menacing aspect of time. Three people are building a large installation from light bricks. While they concentrate on stacking one piece onto another, the base begins to shake. Not unsettled by this, they continue their work while the vibrations keep getting more pronounced. The towers and walls are moving and swaying. The quake dies down. The building continues. The built structure is growing. Until the quake returns. Rusquet has created an ingenious metaphor for the conflict between human effort and the transience of its output.
