The queer New York choreographer Trajal Harrell strikes a blow for tragic-dramatic dance, as once embodied by US American expressionist Martha Graham, in this part of his series “Twenty Looks or Paris is Burning at The Judson Church”. “Antigone Jr” is a contemporary dance version of Sophocles’ “Antigone”. Once again, Harrell doesn’t really intend to develop a historical fiction between the Voguing scene and postmodernism à la Judson Church but to rethink the idea, the contexts of contemporary dance. Together with Thibault Lac, Harrell therefore says “yes” to heroism and tragedy on the stage – passionate and expressive.
