Vienna International Dance Festival

Founded in 1984, ImPulsTanz – Vienna International Dance Festival has over the years evolved into the largest festival for contemporary dance and performance in the world. Every summer it presents a uniquely diverse programme of performances, workshops, research projects and musical acts.

 

All 251 workshops and research projects are now online and available for booking. Tickets for selected performances at Burgtheater, as well as for productions in cooperation with Johann Strauss 2025 Wien, are already on sale. Pre-sale tickets for further performances at Volkstheater and Akademietheater will be available on 7 May. Tickets for the full programme will be available from 11 June.

WORKSHOPS & RESEARCH

Over 150 international and national teaching artists and choreographers share their knowledge with both beginners and professionals in more than 250 workshops and research projects at Arsenal.

Booking opens for 251 workshops and research projects

All 251 workshops and research projects taking place once again in 2025 in the light-filled studios of Vienna’s Arsenal are now online and open for booking. Across 18 departments – including Contemporary, Ballet, Improvisation, Jazz, Composition, Modern and many more – 154 international and local teaching artists offer a diverse programme for participants of all ages and levels, from beginners to professionals. The All Abilities Workshops are being offered again. And together with Dschungel Wien, ImPulsTanz is once again inviting children and young people aged between 3.5 and 18 to take part in 14 Shake the Break workshops.

Welcome Back

What would ImPulsTanz be without its long-time companions and all-time favourites? Returning this year are, among others, voguing legend Archie Burnett, Afro Fusion innovators Sadé and Kristina Alleyne, and slime-conqueror Doris Uhlich. Terence Lewis brings the sparkle of Bollywood dreams to life, while Salim Gauwloos moves participants with his meditative Contemporary Jazz classes. Samantha van Wissen enchants with contemporary dance and improvisation, Libby Farr reveals the elegance of Ballet, Joe Alegado deepens our connection to the earth, and Bruce Taylor follows the impulse of movement.

Public Moves 2025:
Programme in Klagenfurt, Linz, Salzburg & Seestadt now online

Public Moves will be back in 2025 with its free dance classes – daily, outdoors and free of charge. More than 190 international and local teaching artists will share their knowledge in over 360 free classes at a total of 10 locations – including, once again, some outside of Vienna. From 29 May, Public Moves will tour Klagenfurt, Linz and Salzburg, with the Vienna programme kicking off on 7 June in Seestadt. And as always: no previous experience is required – all ages and levels are welcome, come by and join in!

Every year ImPulsTanz presents more than 50 productions by international as well as Austrian artists and companies in an extraordinary density in the theatres and museums of Vienna.

World premiere with Mathilde Monnier in May

With the world premiere of MUSIQUE – In the Spirit of Johann Strauss. The Missing Step, the renowned French choreographer Mathilde Monnier brings a dance journey through the world of Johann Strauss to the stage of Volkstheater – accompanied live by the composer and pianist Judit Varga. Inspired by the era of the great Viennese balls, together with the exceptional, over 40-year-old dancers of the Dance On Ensemble, they trace the spirit of past ball nights – elegantly, intensely and without any sentimental nostalgia.

The first ImPulsTanz highlights are now available.

The Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch + Terrain Boris Charmatz open the festival with two productions: Love and desire await the audience in CLUB AMOUR. Café Müller / Aatt enen tionon / herses, duo. This Austrian premiere combines two works by Boris Charmatz with Bausch’s iconic Café Müller from 1978. Meanwhile, in the masterpiece Nelken, the same company explores love and being loved amidst a sea of pink flowers. Sasha Waltz presents In C to music by Terry Riley, and Akram Khan Company and Manal AlDowayan present their first collaboration, Thikra: Night of Remembering.

Preview of upcoming Performance Highlights

Preparations for the upcoming festival, starting on 10 July, are in full swing and we are delighted to announce more additions to the programme! Audience favourite Alexander Vantournhout embarks on an acrobatic journey with Emmi Väisänen and transforms a simple handshake into an intricate choreography in every_body. After the acclaimed ImPulsTanz Classic BLESSED (2007), Meg Stuart and Francisco Camacho reunite in steal you for a moment, set in the ruins of Sardinia. A thrilling night unfolds as Mette Ingvartsen and her performers present Delirious Night – a celebration of rebellious, unrestrained dance. The renowned choreographer of the film Emilia Pérez, Damien Jalet, presents
Thrice, showcasing three of his latest works, while Marie Chouinard brings an impressive double bill featuring BodyremixRemix and Magnificat, set to
Johann Sebastian Bach’s composition of the same name. Last but not least, Akemi Takeya’s company celebrates a world premiere in Austria with Transient Shifts.

OPEN CALL: LACE Extended 2025 – Apply Now!

Professional artists, activists, and academics working in dance, performance, and embodied arts are invited to apply for LACE Extended (21–25 July 2025), a week of in-depth peer exchange following the LACE #3: Materialising Touch symposium. LACE Extended offers time and space for peer-to-peer, practice-based exchange around relationality, interstitiality, and collective inquiry – grounded in artistic, academic, and activist practices. Participants can choose between three unique spaces hosted by Naoto Hieda (hybrid), Yas Lamar, or Tereza Silon – each offering a deep dive into relational and practice-based exploration.

Kickstart for emerging dancers

The Summer Academy ImPacT, part of ImPulsTanz, welcomes dance students – either in the midst of or having just completed their studies – individually and in groups for two weeks at the festival. The aim is to connect them with the professional international dance world. In addition to workshops and performances, the programme offers discussions with festival artists and networking events. Furthermore, the students are accompanied by dance researcher and Somatic Movement Educator Kerstin Kussmaul.

Mathilde Monnier announced Officer of the French Legion of Honour and celebrates her world premiere at Volkstheater Vienna in May

The renowned French choreographer Mathilde Monnier was awarded the Officer’s Order of the French Legion of Honour, the highest distinction in France. We congratulate the exceptional choreographer and look forward to presenting her world premiere in cooperation with Johann Strauss 2025 Vienna at Volkstheater on 10 and 12 May!
