Founded in 1984, ImPulsTanz – Vienna International Dance Festival has over the years evolved into the largest festival for contemporary dance and performance in the world. Every summer it presents a uniquely diverse programme of performances, workshops, research projects and musical acts.

PERFORMANCES

Every year ImPulsTanz presents more than 50 productions by international as well as Austrian artists and companies in an extraordinary density in the theatres and museums of Vienna.

ImPulsTanz 2024: We say thank you!

In 150 performances, we celebrated with more than 45,000 visitors in the theatres and museums of Vienna. We danced through approximately 43,800 course units in 268 workshops and research projects at Arsenal. We took dancing outdoors during 357 free Public Moves classes with 18,000 participants and 26,000 spectators. And we wrapped up the over 32 ImPulsTanz nights with around 25,000 night owls at the Festival Lounge at Burgtheater Vestibül and the Vienna City Hall. In total, more than 180,000 people danced, watched and celebrated with us, embracing dance in all its forms. Thank you to everyone who was part of it – we’ll see you at the next ImPulsTanz Festival from 10 July to 10 August 2025!

The ImPulsTanz – Young Choreographers’ Award goes to:

Deva Schubert Glitch Choir and Viní Ventania, Vitòria Jovem / Irmãs Brasil Eunuchs! “As a jury, we have decided to honour an artistic position not only for its performance, but for the curiosity it has aroused in us. We therefore decided and were given the great opportunity to honour two choreographic positions equally. Both showed compelling explorations of pressing issues, pushed the boundaries of choreography and shook our comfort zone – in almost opposite ways,” read the jury consisting of Jette Büchsenschütz, Anne Faucheret and Raja Feather Kelly at the Award Ceremony at Odeon on Sunday, 11 August. We warmly congratulate the winners on the award, which includes a residency at ImPulsTanz 2025 and a prize of 5,000 euro.

Public Moves Favoriten – Special Edition!

Attention all fans of the popular Public Moves classes! After a brilliant festival summer, we've all been able to take a breather. Now there is one more opportunity to end the summer dancing together. From 20 – 22 September, a Public Moves Special will take place in Wien Favoriten. The yellow dance floor will be rolled out at Columbusplatz to give participants the opportunity to get to know dance in all its facets – outdoors, for all levels and free of charge! The exciting programme, curated by Fio Losin, promises a reunion with some familiar faces as well as newcomers who taught at Public Moves for the first time this year. We look forward to seeing you again in Wien Favoriten!

Country Retreats in Umbria!

Want to continue dancing and moving after ImPulsTanz 2024? The dance and health retreats will once again take place this summer at the picturesque Tenuta di Poggiolame estate run by ImPulsTanz instructor Kerstin Kussmaul. After Terence Lewis, Glenna / G;emma Batson, Kerstin Kussmaul, Sri Louise and Defne Erdur have already given their retreats, Shinichi Yova-Koga will be teaching Qi Gong, Dao Yin & Butoh under the title The Presence of Spirals from 27 September to 4 October. The retreats offer four hours of exercise a day and a day off to explore the enchanting Umbrian countryside or simply relax under the Italian sun – all levels welcome!

Embodied Myoreflex Practitioner Certification

The Embodied Myoreflex Practitioner (EMP) training programme is entering its second round – a pioneering training in the field of myoreflex therapy and neurofascial movement. This specifically designed training is aimed at dancers, artists, educators, social workers and physiotherapists who not only want to build an effective practice, but also develop their skills through the application of neurofascial intelligence in a variety of contexts. Led by renowned experts such as Kurt Mosetter and Kerstin Kussmaul, the programme offers an intensive learning experience. The registration deadline was pushed back to 15 September, while the programme starts in November 2024!

The music programme invites festival guests and visitors to concerts and DJ sets at the Festival Lounge every night and to the ImPulsTanz Soçial Weekender on two evenings at Vienna City Hall’s Arkadenhof.

The nights became day

This year, we celebrated with more than 25,000 people not only over 32 nights at the ImPulsTanz Festival Lounge at Burgtheater Vestibül, but also on two evenings at the ImPulsTanz Soçial Weekender at Arkadenhof at Vienna City Hall. A total of 11 live acts, 62 DJs and numerous festival artists, teachers, staff and friends as part of ImPulsTanz on Decks provided us with music. Thank you for coming, thank you for dancing and celebrating with us!

OPEN CALL | Internship in Zagreb at the Choreographic Convention 2024 “BODIES IN FREE FALL”

In the frame of Life Long Burning danceWEB in collaboration with the partner organization Antisezona in Zagreb is looking for young dance critics/producers/independent dance curators/artists interested in getting to know the contemporary dance scene in Croatia. This internship is dedicated to the Choreographic Convention from 19 to 23 November 2024 and especially interesting for persons with an interest in inclusive art production and in video documentation. Travel, accommodation, employment and free entrance to all events are included. Application deadline: 2 October 2024

William Forsythe receives the Kyoto Prize

The renowned choreographer and dancer William Forsythe has been honoured with the prestigious Kyoto Prize 2024. The award honours Forsythe’s outstanding contributions to contemporary dance art and his groundbreaking works that have revolutionised the understanding of dance. We look forward to opening the ImPulsTanz Festival at the MAK in 2024 together with him and his Choreographic Objects!

Obituary for Brigitte Bierlein

It is with great sadness and deepest sympathy that we bid farewell to Brigitte Bierlein, an extraordinary woman who left a lasting mark through her multifaceted commitment and tireless dedication both in politics and in the art world – including ImPulsTanz. You will be missed!
