ALEXANDER LAB - Strategies for Change

“A task of self-knowledge for the performer: to find what liberates your strengths…
One must ask – what am I doing to keep me from my full powers?”

Daniel Nagrin, dancer, choreographer, educator

The underpinnings of our movement and thought patterns often escape our radar. We’re unaware of what our neutral actually is, although it is the basis for our dancing. AT sheds light on how we organise to move in the most basic ways. It offers processes that facilitate change. The LAB introduces Alexander’s principles for developing a reliable feedback system, facilitating a streamlined economy of effort and pleasure in dancing. Through anatomical explorations, movement etudes, sensory awareness studies, hands-on work, and improvisational structures, we will explore Alexander’s strategies for change.

Introduction to Alexander Technique & Movement
working together

The workshop introduces the guiding principles of the Alexander Technique. We focus on embodying Alexander's central premises for increasing awareness and freedom in movement: Simple OBSERVATION of Self - becoming curious, no judgment; PAUSING momentarily to allow ourselves to respond in the moment rather than react habitually; and CHOOSING to move with consciousness, with our body's design, rather than against it. Designed for people new to Alexander, as well as for those who have studied it previously and wish to review and deepen their understanding.
Activities will include: simple movement studies promoting integration and flexibility; sensory awareness studies; contemplation of our dynamic skeletal structure; everyday life movements explored from an Alexander perspective; and simple movement improvisations. Designed for people new to Alexander, as well as for those who have studied it previously and wish to review and deepen their understanding.

ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE with Judith Grodowitz
Alexander Technique (AT) provides processes for letting go of restrictive patterns of body and mind, inviting presence and flexibility where there was rigidity and strain. Though we are beautifully designed to move with lightness and internal support, we often develop unconscious patterns of tension that interfere with this freedom. They can cause pain, diminish movement range, and limit creative choices. AT engages the mind to recognize and release these patterns. Using the body as its’ inherent design suggests, we enjoyed increased fluidity and a dynamic, easeful range of movement. Breathing is unencumbered and full. We become more alert to the moment and thus, more responsive to creative possibilities.Alexander is taught through movement, language and a unique, guiding touch. All students receive hands-on guidance from Judith.
