Dances & Rhythms of Mali

African dance is soften associated with energy and lust for life. It is a spontaneaous and joyful reaction to the rhythmic diversity combined with traditional movements, which can be danced a thousand times but still feel different and vary every time. Each dance step is based on a logical anatomical movement. It becomes effortless and variable as soon as the body has acquired the principle of the movements.
Oumou Mariko teaches tradional dance from Mali and passes on the songs and background information related to the rhythms. Her dance classes are filled with lighthearted and exhilarating atmosphere and reminds African dance celebrations. Inspired by the fiery melodies of the Djembe, participants will lift-off and get carried away by the emerging flow of energy in the studio.
Drissa Kone, Oumou’s long-time musical partner will accompany the class facilitating the experience of the deep connection between music and dance.



Oumou Mariko
Oumou Mariko started to dance with regional groups in Mali and was a highly acclaimed star before coming to Europe with the group Sanza in the 1990ies. As educator at the beatfactory she gives concerts and dance workshops on a regular basis in Veinna. Oumou has the ability to crown the exciting dance style of Bamako by adding her inimitable personal aestethics and power. Even in the most minimal of movements she is able to arouse such excitement in the audience. One can feel the upcoming explosion. And still in her most explosive Furioso she is never lacking her style and elegance.
Oumou is considered to bet he hub in her home country, dancers come from all over the world to study with her. Additionally she is a singer and performs for TV-shows and the radio.
