Vera Mantero (P)
"Solos“ The Portuguese choreographer and dancer acting the part of legendary Josephine Baker: Vera Montero’s solo piece "a mysterious Thing, said e.e. cummings" (1996) has become one of the classics of 1990s choreography. A strange, and strangely beautiful piece about a woman whose life was by no means limited to nude performance. For a further solo, "Olímpia" (1993), Mantero becomes the "Olympia" of Edouard Manet’s famous picture of the same name; and in "Perhaps she can dance first and think afterwards" (1991) the artist refers to a quote from Samuel Beckett’s "Waiting for Godot", improvising to the music of jazz legend Thelonious Monk.
