Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo / Jean-Christophe Maillot & Liquid Loft | Chris Haring (MC/AT)
Daphnis et Chloé / Sacre: The Rite Thing
Austrian choreographer Chris Haring, winner of the Golden Lion in Venice, works together with “Les Ballets de Monte Carlo”, who also collaborated with artists including William Forsythe and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. Founded 25 years ago by the Monacan princess Caroline and with French choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot as director, the company is now among the leading ballets in Europe. The programme Maillot presents at ImPulsTanz includes his own creation “Daphnis and Chloé” to the music by Maurice Ravel, who considered this choreographic symphony one of his major works. A tender love story between two teenagers, “prudish yet quivering with pleasure, a graceful yet passionate duet, funny, subtle and intense” (Libération). Chris Haring’s piece “The Rite Thing” with dancers from the company is a reflection on “Le Sacre du Printemps”, the dance classic of the modern age: a pop-art-like demystification in the spirit of Andy Warhol, including ready-mades from past dance adaptations of this material.
