"Blackbird"
Trapped! The dancer’s arms, head and shoulders are caught in an elastic tube extending to the unknown above. A voice can be heard from there. A formidable manipulator is at work, so it seems, until a black demon cuts the tube: Born at last!
Master choreographer Jirí Kylián, long time mentor of Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT), has styled his movement composition to suit the charismatic dancer Megumi Nakamura and complements her onstage performance with video projections displaying her other life. A variety of stills, one rapidly following the other, provide ample ground for her mimic expressiveness, as does her love duet with a virtual man and her longing solo.
Never does "Blackbird" become melancholy, since the dancer’s unique sense of humour will always force its way. Megumi Nakamura unrolls the course of an entire life from birth to old age and, with Kylián’s help, remains absolutely authentic in all her transformations.
A unique and mature work with a rare air of freshness, which incorporates video projections in a congenial way and, by the means of dance, renders a complete story of life.
