"Report On Giving Birth”

In 1994 the choreographer Wen Hui founded the only independent dance company in China so far. Ever since she has pursued her ambitious and radical objective: to reflect contemporary Chinese society by the means of an innovative multimedia dance theatre. Today her Living Dance Studio in Beijing is tolerated, yet not subsidized by governmental authorities. For her most popular work, "Report On Giving Birth" (1999), she conducted interviews with over thirty women of the age from 21 to 93, with different social backgrounds and professions, but one thing in common: they all have given birth to one or more children. The outcome is a unique portrait of Chinese life as experienced by women, and of their relationship with their bodies.
