"Chorale" & "Le Sacre du Printemps"
Animal instinct and modern rites: "Chorale" (2003), a stirring piece by the expressive Canadian choreographer Marie Chouinard, has ten dancers howling at the moon, using their breathing as a collective beatbox, exchanging wanton kisses or exploring their sexuality. The piece moves between comic strip and current tribal rites; it is simultaneously archaic and urban, ironic and dangerous, anarchic and precise.
For her explosive version of Igor Stravinsky’s modern classic "Le Sacre du Printemps", a creation of 1993, Chouinard created vibrant dance solos to joyfully celebrate life. Here, dance is all vital energy and mere presence. "There is no story told in this ,Sacre’, there is no development, no cause and effect. Only synchronicity. It focuses on the moment of genesis, of coming into existence. The piece is the birth of this very moment", says Chouinard. "She has unraveled a surprising, even staggering ,Rite of Spring’. Vigorous, wild body movements, tinged with an exceptionally eloquent primitivism, something strong and earthly that shakes your very soul." (Le Nouvel Observateur, Paris 1994)
