Legs executing a raving pizzicato, arms scourging through the air, hands humming like insects: The ballerinas in „Amelia“, the new piece by Canadian star choreographer Édouard Lock, are wrapped in black lace and dance like female tornados, with breath-taking speed and tantalizing elegance – while their partners, debonairly dressed in grey suits, recourse to bold movements, thus proving men’s new self-confidence to be a mixture of fragility and strength.
Outstanding technique and brilliant composition merge to form one unique ballet of no other than the super and cyber class. Like Lara Croft’s prettier sister a byte ballerina’s projection haunts a stage dominated by a tendril-like grid structure, exploding in a stern black and white spotlight thunderstorm – were it not for the live performed compositions by David Lung and a live sung ballad with texts by Lou Reed. Five women and four men are dancing in a dreamland, they are mesmerized, situated on a remote planet. Unobtainable beauty, exceptional elegance and Coppelia-like animation turn „Amelia“ into a complex and precious fabric, in which the spectators’ accelerated perception has long become a form in its own right.
