Ushio Amagatsu & Sankaï Juku (JP)
"Unetso"

The moods in "Unetso", one of the timelessly beautiful works by Japanese choreographer Ushio Amagatsu for his company Sankai Juku, are those of meditative composure. Amagatsu’s baldheaded dancers resemble buddhistic monks celebrating a silent ritual around huge, errect eggs, symbols of the unborn, the coming-into-being.

"Kagemi"

In "Kagemi", dating back to 2000, the choreographer offers a look at a world "beyond the metaphors of the mirror" (so the subtitle). In seven scenes water, wind and dance, echo and light, abundance and emptiness blend and turn into a fascinating stage composition. Here Butoh, "the dance of darkness", expands and becomes universal, a transformation exclusive to the clear aestheticism of traditional Japanese culture.
